A Fast-Growing E-Commerce Platform Scales to Handle 10x Peak Traffic

The impact

10xtraffic capacity
5xfaster deployment cycles
0downtime during peak sales

The challenge

The platform's growth was outrunning its architecture. Sale events brought traffic spikes the monolith absorbed with slowdowns and occasional outages — each one a direct revenue loss and a trending complaint. The engineering team knew the ceiling was close; the commercial team was planning campaigns that would blow past it.

Our approach

A load test that reproduced real traffic shapes — browse-heavy surges, checkout concentration, payment retries — established where the system actually broke, which differed from where the team suspected. The findings drove an incremental re-architecture: the checkout and catalogue paths were extracted and rebuilt for horizontal scale first, using strangler patterns inside the running platform, with no big-bang rewrite and no feature freeze.

Alongside the architecture work, deploys were made boring: pipelines with automated regression gates, canary releases, and autoscaling tuned against the measured demand curves rather than guesswork.

The results

Validated capacity reached ten times the previous peak, and the next major sale ran with zero downtime — the first in the company's history without a war room. Deployment cycles are five times faster, and capacity planning for campaigns is now a calculation instead of a gamble.
